When Nehemiah returned to Jerusalem, seeing the sad condition of the city walls, he knew they needed to rebuild. And under his loving leadership, the people worked together to fortify the city in only 52 days (Neh. 6:15-16). How was this kind of growth possible? "... the people had a mind to work" (Neh. 4:6)!

Requires Planning

"Then I arose in the night, I and a few men with me. ... I went out by night by the Valley Gate to the Dragon Spring and to the Dung Gate, and I inspected the walls of Jerusalem that were broken down and its gates that had been destroyed by fire" (Neh. 2:12-13).

Nehemiah surveyed the situation by night, planning the work. Growth doesn't just happen — it takes thought and careful inspection. State your goals, your intentions, and make them measurable. Once you've planned the work, then get to work on the plan. How foolish it is to think we could ever succeed in our spiritual building projects without a plan. So, what are your goals for growth this year?

Takes Work

"So we labored at the work, and half of them held the spears from the break of dawn until the stars came out" (Neh. 4:21).

The people didn't relax until they finished the job. Growth doesn't just happen to us, or is something we're "blessed" with — it's about the work we're willing to put in. Sadly though, growth costs more than some are willing to pay. But if work is good enough for Jesus (John 9:4), then it's good enough for us. So, are you ready to endure the (sometimes) back-breaking work of building?

Use Every Resource

"Then Eliashib the high priest rose up with his brothers the priests, and they built the Sheep Gate. ... And next to him the men of Jericho built. And next to them Zaccur the son of Imri built" (Neh. 3:1-2).

Nehemiah gave everyone a job and counted on them to do their part — just like we all have a function in building the body of Christ today (Eph. 4:15-16). We're not alone! Count on each other for help, and be willing to come to their aid as well. When we're all actively building, few will be quick to tear down. So, are you ready to lean on others for support while you grow?

As you begin a new year, may God bless you with a growth mindset. Develop a plan, don't rest until the work is done, and depend on others around you to reach your goal of spiritual growth!
