Nehemiah returned to Jerusalem to find a nation in disarray. Under his leadership, he developed a plan to unite them together again in a massive rebuilding effort. Nothing brings people together more than working toward a common goal, and that sense of unity was just what God's people needed.
Encourage Each Other
"And I told them of the hand of my God that had been upon me for good, and also of the words that the king had spoken to me. And they said, "Let us rise up and build." So they strengthened their hands for the good work" (Neh. 2:18).
Nehemiah was incredibly persuasive and motivational. His encouragement set the people's minds at ease to tackle the tough work ahead. But too many today are quick to complain, criticize, and promote a pessimistic view toward change. What about you? Are you supportive of others, encouraging them to love and good works (Heb. 10:24)?
Love the Brethren
"... "We, as far as we are able, have bought back our Jewish brothers who have been sold to the nations, but you even sell your brothers that they may be sold to us!" They were silent and could not find a word to say" (Neh. 8:8).
Nehemiah had to address the lack of love, which threatened to destroy their unity. And the people were speechless when they heard his rebuke. Let's face it — humans make mistakes! If we want forgiveness, why not offer some in return? But often, it's too easy to believe the "worst" about a brother — to turn on each other rather than to each other. When our love is like the church of the first century, our growth will be like theirs, too (John 13:34-35). Are you willing to build unity by loving your brother as yourself?
Don't Get Careless
"So neither I nor my brothers nor my servants nor the men of the guard who followed me, none of us took off our clothes; each kept his weapon at his right hand" (Neh. 4:23).
In the face of extreme opposition, the people were always ready for action. It seems like too many saints today are on auto-pilot, satisfied with the status quo, and resistant to change. While it's easy to get complacent, let's not forget that we're fighting a spiritual battle! If we're satisfied with "the way things are," we'll never grow. So, will you be a soldier who's alert to the dangers around you, or one who's careless and distracted?
May God bless us with unity today. And may we seize every opportunity to encourage, show love, and to care about our collective work for Christ in the new year!
