Chances are, you’ve probably had firsthand experience with ants in your home. These pesky little insects always seem to pop up around our house in the spring and summer, prompting us to search for their source and put down insecticide.

So what’s the best way to kill an ant? Believe it or not, the Bible has some helpful instructions on destroying these tiny little nuisances!

Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise. Without having any chief, officer, or ruler, she prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food in harvest” (Prov. 6:6-8).

Attack Their Action

Ants always seem to be active. They’re lined up in a row, searching for food and carrying it back to their home. A shared sense of purpose drives them, making them incredibly effective. So, to destroy the ant, distract them from the work they should be doing!

How long will you lie there, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep?” (Prov. 6:9).

Ants take action, but do you? Are you motivated, driven, and busy with the Lord’s work?

Destroy Their Discipline

While ants work together, they have no ruler or taskmaster to make sure they’re doing their job. They’re each aware of their role, and they take responsibility. You never see a lazy ant sitting on a tiny couch. So, to destroy the ant, convince them to rest while someone else does the work!

A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest” (Prov. 6:10).

Ants live with discipline, but do you? Are you engaged, responsible, and self-controlled enough to not require micromanagement?

Eradicate Their Readiness

Ants don’t live “paycheck to paycheck.” Food is only available during certain times of the year, so they store it up and prepare themselves for the scarcity of winter. They need to live with the future in mind, planning, so they have enough food to survive. So, to destroy the ant, make sure they’re living in the moment rather than planning for the future!

... poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man” (Prov. 6:11).

Ants live with readiness, but do you? Are you prepared, forward-thinking, planning for the uncertain future ahead?

No, Solomon wasn’t telling us how to kill ants in this proverb. But we do learn a valuable lesson from them! Looking at these tiny insects, we find encouragement to get to work and avoid the destructive effects of laziness in our lives.

So, may the Lord help us all to become more active, disciplined, and ready as we serve Him on this earth!
