You're thrown in jail for a crime you didn't commit — beaten unlawfully by people who hate you. What do you do when the jail cells suddenly burst open? Make a run for it or stay put?

In Acts 16, Paul and Silas found themselves faced with this exact situation, and their reaction may surprise you.

Singing in Shackles

"About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them, and suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken. And immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone's bonds were unfastened" (Acts 16:25-26).

After casting out the evil spirit from a young girl (Acts 16:16-18), they seized Paul and Silas, beat them, and threw them in jail. Their response: prayer and singing! It's not what you'd expect, but they were making the best of the situation.

Though we may never face such opposition for our faith, what can we learn from their example? Standing up for what's right isn't going to be popular with the world, but that shouldn't make us bitter or angry. Rejoice when you face trials (1 Peter 1:6)! Trust the Lord to deliver you, as he did for them when that great earthquake opened their cell doors.

Seeking Suicide

"When the jailer woke and saw that the prison doors were open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped. But Paul cried with a loud voice, "Do not harm yourself, for we are all here"" (Acts 16:27-28).

Guards were responsible for prisoners with their lives! And when they lost an inmate, they often lost their lives (Acts 12:19). So it's no surprise that this jailer would turn to suicide, thinking that everyone had escaped. Fortunately, they all stayed put and called for him to put his weapon down.

Like the jailer, many people experience hopelessness today. But that's why we need to follow Paul's example and make sure the hope-filled message of Christ is heard! It's not too late. Things aren't too bad to turn to the Lord in faith.

Suddenly Saved

"And the jailer called for lights and rushed in, and trembling with fear he fell down before Paul and Silas. Then he brought them out and said, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" And they said, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household"" (Acts 16:29-31).

What a response! But why was this his first question? Could their songs and prayers have been a factor? Who knows what kind of influence we'll have on the world when we quietly, practice our faith in this world? And when others see our humble service, in their darkest hours, they'll know who to turn to for guidance.

So, may we endure trials as they did. And let's focus on filling this world with the hopeful message of Christ's saving grace with every interaction today!
