As the parent of a young girl, I’ve probably seen the Disney movie Frozen more times than I’d care to admit. Even just mentioning the movie, maybe you’re like me and already singing Elsa’s iconic words, “Let it go!” in your head. It’s a catchy song, but a message we need to think about as disciples of Christ today.

Then the soldiers cut away the ropes of the ship’s boat and let it go … (and) they cast off the anchors and left them in the sea …” (Acts 27:32, 40).

During Paul’s perilous journey to Rome, the soldiers did the unthinkable and cut away the lifeboats and anchors — abandoning all thoughts of escape — at God’s instruction. What are you willing to let go of today to serve him better?

Let Go Of The Past

Sometimes we let our past successes define us. Sometimes it’s our past failures. Maybe you’ve even had a boss that’s asked you, “What have you done for me lately?” No matter what we’ve done before, what matters most is what we’re doing today! Even Paul put the past in the past, as he said, “… forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus” (Phil. 3:13–14). If we cling too tightly to the stories we tell ourselves about who we are, we won’t clearly see how to make the right choices for God today.

Let Go Of Sin

The entanglements of our past lives of sin will weigh us down if we’re not willing to let them go. As the Hebrew writer said, “… let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us …” (Heb. 12:1). Imagine trying to run a race with bricks tied to your legs! Would you be able to win the race? Would you even stand a chance of finishing? With sin still clinging so tightly to your heart, how can you expect to endure to the end of this race called life? It’s time to examine your heart and see what needs to be cut away, with Christ’s help, to experience the true freedom he extends.

Let Go Of Unhealthy Relationships

We can also get tied down by unhealthy relationships. Paul warned against these kinds of friends, saying, “Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?” (2 Cor. 6:14). Sadly, I’ve seen first-hand the impact that unbelieving friends can have on followers of Christ, and too often it has lead to disaster. Who do you call your friends? If they aren’t building you up and helping you grow in Christ, it’s time to let them go!
