“4 Ways to Use Square One”
We’ve worked the past few months to create a series that can take someone from square one — knowing next to nothing about the gospel — into discipleship. As we launch our Square One series, I want to share a few suggestions on different ways you can use these resources.
1. One-on-One Evangelism
We created these because we wanted a loose guide for our studies with non-Christians. There are lots of other resources out there, but after years of sitting across a table with unbelievers and leading these kinds of studies, this is the resource we wanted someone to provide for us, so we went ahead and made it.
Invite a friend to explore life’s big questions and discuss how Jesus changes things. Pick a time and place and work through these sessions together. For more guidance and preparation for these conversations, check out our short evangelism study, “Getting to Square One.”
2. Share the Video
In the coming weeks, we’ll start releasing two sets of videos for Square One. First, we’ll release the videos to use as you guide a study with someone. Each session will have five videos, one for each section. But second, we’ll also release a single video for each session that you can share with someone to let them get the gist of the conversation. Of course, a conversation is ideal, but sometimes you just want to share a video and let someone process it on their own.
3. Answer Specific Questions
Suppose your son asks you, “What’s the Bible all about?” Or, “Why do you believe in Jesus?” As you work through common questions together, you might at some point want a resource to guide the discussion, with conversation questions and succinct videos full of helpful information. Enter Square One as a “Choose Your Own Adventure” guide, allowing you to pick any of the 13 title questions the study is built around. Here’s the full list:
Why are things so messed up?
What does the Bible have to do with me?
What's the Bible all about?
Why should you believe in Jesus?
How does Jesus change things?
What's so great about Jesus?
How will my life change?
What's the story with baptism?
How will God work in me?
What do I need to do to be saved?
Why do I need the church?
What about everyone else?
What's next?
4. Small Groups & Classes
This summer, I plan to use Square One as part of our middle school Bible class curriculum, working through the basics of faith and salvation with our young people. It could also work for some small group studies.
We’re also exploring a fifth way to use the study — leading discussions from a deck of conversation cards instead of the videos. Does this sound helpful to you? How else can we improve this resource? If you have questions, suggestions, or other ways you’ve found to use these guided studies, reach out and let us know!
